Dearer trend for Sheep at Wagga Wagga

Numbers declined on the back of last week’s cheaper market. Trade weight lambs 21 to 24kg were in short supply. Extra heavy lambs 26 to 30kg were in good supply. Lambs over 30kg carcass weight once again made up a large portion of the offering. Big super heavy lambs met strong demand due to the lack of numbers over 33kg cwt. Most regular buyers were in attendance. Local restockers were operating occasionally, whilst feedlots purchased a reasonable number under 21kg cwt.

In the trade run, a major domestic processor controlled the market for all the better shaped shorter skin lambs. Lambs weighing 22kg to 24kg gained $2 to average 811c to 821c/kg cwt. Merino trade lambs sold to an enthusiastic group of buyers and most categories sold to stronger price trends. Merino trade lambs averaged 757c/kg carcass weight. Young lambs to feed on through the winter months sold at $151 to $183/head.

There was a big field of export buyers in attendance however not all were operating fully. Heavy and extra heavy lambs sold to erratic bidding, with weight influencing prices. Heavy lambs 24 to 26kg gained $3 averaging 796c/kg cwt. Lambs 26 to 30kg cwt made from $208 to $235 averaging 760c/kg cwt. Extra heavy Lambs over 30kg cwt found support with buyers igniting the bidding on the heaviest pens. Prices jumped $8 to average 731c/kg cwt.

It was a mixed quality yarding of mutton, with heavy sheep in shorter supply. Not all buyers participated across heavy categories. Heavy ewe prices lifted $3 to $5/head. Heavy crossbred ewes made from $173 to $245/head to average 627c to 668c/kg cwt. Heavy wethers sold from $210 to $288 averaging 659c/kg cwt. Merino ewes with plenty of weight sold at $210 to $224/head. Trade sheep sold $3 to $9 dearer to average 665c/kg cwt.
