Cheaper trend for most Lamb categories at Ballarat

Lamb supply eased to 23,470 penned, quality remained excellent through the heavy trade and export categories. Light trade and store lambs improved but remained mixed ranging from plain to very good. Not All the usual buying group attended, the market opened softer and fluctuated throughout. As the sale progressed buyers became more selective and bidding only intensified on the neat well finished lambs in short skin.

Store buyers were again active, but also selective when bidding. Lambs back to the paddock under 18kg made from $52 to $132, slipping $7 and over 18kg from $133 to $166, selling firm to $5/head cheaper. Lambs to the trade to suit MK orders under 18kg sold from $100 to $132, to $8 softer, 18-22kg sold from $135 to $176, $3 to $6 cheaper, 22-24kg sold from $168 to $198 selling to $7 softer and 24-26kg made from $190 to $206, back $8/head. Export lambs 26 to 30kg sold from $206 to $240, taking the biggest knock slipping $10 to $15/head and over 30kg made from $243 to $282, back $8/head. Most lambs averaged between 730c to 760c with some sales still reaching 800c/kg cwt.

Sheep numbers also dropped to 7,740 yarded, quality ranged from plain to good, light sheep remained similar while medium and heavy sheep gained $6 to $15/head across the yarding. Merino wethers selling from $35 to $129/head. Merino ewes sold from $26 to $116 and heavy crossbred mutton sold from $84 to $154/head.
