Numbers declined due to a price correction at last week’s sale. The on-going decline in quality made no difference to buyers, with processors feedlots and restockers all prepared to up the ante. Prices for all categories sold dearer led by Merino lambs. A bigger group of export companies attended and all were eager to secure supplies. A bigger contingent of restockers were operating over all lightweight categories.
Competition was stronger for short skinned well shaped lambs which caused carcass weight prices to spike up to 957c/kg cwt. Lambs 21 to 24kg tracked $10 to $13/head dearer. The bulk selling from $172 to $222 to average 836c/kg cwt. Lambs 24 to 26kg met strong demand from domestic processors improving $18 to average to average 816c/kg cwt. Merino Trade lambs sold up to $20 dearer making from $146 to $205/head. Lambs back to the paddock sold from $125 to $169/head.
Extra heavy lambs over 30kg carcass weight were in reasonable supply with most estimated to weight between 31 to 34kg cwt. Extra heavy lamb weighing more than 30kg carcass weight sold $12 dearer recording a top price of $280/head to average 753c/kg cwt. Lambs 26 to 30kg were also in shorter supply pressuring buyers for the well-shaped shorter skinned types. Prices surged $21 selling from $198 to $250/head.
It was a very mixed quality yarding of mutton that was offered to a bigger group of buyers. Trade sheep were well supplied and buying demand was stronger. Trade sheep made from $125 to $150/head to average 590c/kg cwt. Heavy sheep sold to stronger competition selling from $158 to $220/head to average 540c to 606c/kg cwt.
