Bringing something to the table - I listened to an excellent podcast the other day. You might know the "Humans of Agriculture" podcast, well, in this episode, Ollie interviewed Erica Halliday, a Farmer at Walcha, NSW.

It is well worth a listen as there are many Farming and life takeaways. One subject we bang on about is succession. Well, Erica and her husband went through the succession process with Erica's parents, and they did something very different from what I have heard of before.

When they took over the Farm, they bought a side business to add to the main Farming enterprise. It was another lease block they had been building up with a line of Cattle.

We talk a lot about having a side hustle. It could be directly related to what you do on the Farm, like in this case, or it could be something completely different. Bringing your side hustle to the table when it is time to take over the main Farming enterprise can take the pressure off the main business. It might enable you to better retire out the oldies with an income and provide some decent wages for the new owners. There is something good about this scenario of bringing something along. The transfer of the Farm business might be your legacy or reward for years of dedication working alongside your parents. It's a tough gig this succession stuff, but bringing something along to the table can only make the process go smoother. What could you bring to the table? Reply to dwaind@farmtender.com.au
