Big lift in numbers at Wagga Wagga

Numbers lifted with farmers finished cropping and paddocks cleared for ewes and lambs. Lambs over 30kg carcase made up a large portion of the extra heavy stock. Lambs 26 to 30kg sold to erratic bidding which was reflected in the spread of prices. Trade lambs sold stronger with buyers prepared to pay a premium for the lead lambs in each run. A full field of buyers were in attendance with local restockers operating along with feedlots on the younger types.

In the trade, bidding was strong from all southern companies. Lambs weighing 22 to 24kg gained $6, while neat trade lambs 21 to 22kg suiting domestic orders eased $2/head to average 819c/kg cwt. Merino trade lambs sold to a keen group of buyers and most categories sold to stronger price trends. Young lambs returning to feed through winter sold from $172 to $206/head.

Heavy and extra heavy lambs sold to erratic prices with weight influencing prices. The price of heavy 24 to 26kg lambs remained unchanged averaging 804c/kg cwt. Lambs 26 to 30kg sold to a cheaper trend to average 744c/kg cwt. There was competition from a large group of buyers for extra-heavy lambs over 30kg with prices strengthening as the sale progressed. Prices ranged from $224 to $289 while extra heavy Merino lambs made from $212 to $225/head.

It was another mixed quality yarding of mutton with heavy sheep in good numbers, however not all buyers participated. There was competition for heavy ewes as a northern processor dominated the market. Heavy crossbred ewes made from $186 to $253/head to average 675c/kg cwt. Heavy wethers sold from $212 to $267 averaging 662c/kg cwt and heavy Merino ewes sold from $212 to $253/head. Trade sheep sold to dearer trends to average 703c/kg cwt.
