Big gains across the board at Ballarat

Lamb’s numbers decreased again to 16,900 penned. Heavy and extra heavy weight categories presented in excellent condition but there was a large portion of the yarding plainer secondary types. Not all the usual buyers were present and not all were active in a market that opened strong over all categories, with some buyers off the rail not entering in the market. Store buyers were keen but had stronger competition from processors with light lambs selling to $10 dearer, medium wights sold from $10 to $15/head better and heavy and heavy export lambs sold $15 to $25 dearer, with heavy export lambs sold to a top of $302/head.
Lambs back to the paddock sold from $43 to $149 and lambs to feed on made from $140 to $162/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg sold from $85 to $138/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $140 to $192, lambs 22 to 26kg sold $181 to $222/head to have a wide range from 760c to 860c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $197 to $258 and over 30kg sold from $260 to $302/head with an average range of 840c to 870c/kg cwt. Hoggets made from $65 to $210 gaining $15/head for the crossbreds and $38 to $150, selling to $16/head dearer for Merino’s.

Mutton numbers decreased to 7,211. Quality improved over the yarding, in a market that received great results. Merino wethers sold from $69 to $96 for the light weights and $72 to $168 for the medium and heavy weights, gaining $10 to $25/head. Merino Ewes made from $20 to $99 for the lighter weights and $72 to $170/head for the heavy weights, selling to $35/head dearer, with merino mutton averaging 450c to 490c/kg for the better quality. Heavy crossbred mutton made from $104 to $173, and the light weights made from $14 to $115, selling $15 to $40/head dearer, and to average 372c to 465c/kg.
