Animated bidding on Lambs at Wagga Wagga

Yarding - 43,000 (-2500).
Lambs - 35,000 (-3000).
Sheep - 8000 (+500).

Lamb supplies declined slightly. New season lamb numbers dropped to 24,100. Quality was excellent over new season trade and heavy lamb categories. Old heavy and extra heavy lamb numbers dipped however there was still an excellent selection of lambs weighing in excess of 30kg carcase weight. Restockers from Ballarat and Bathurst were at the rail paying from $153 to $178/head. A full field of export and domestic buyers were in attendance.

New season trade lamb quality was exceptional, with Victorian processors again dominating the market. Lambs weighing 22 to 24kg sold from $169 to $189 resulting in a dearer trend of $6/head. Merino trade lambs sold to a large group of buyers and all categories sold to stronger competition to average from 650c to 683c/kg cwt.

There was a full field of export buyers in attendance and in a very animated sale prices jumped $9 higher. New season heavy lambs were keenly sought improving $6 to average 716c/kg cwt. Extra heavy young lambs recorded a top price of $232/head with the general run averaging 696c/kg cwt. Extra heavy old ignited the bidding making from $188 to $263/head to average 697c/kg cwt.

It was another good quality yarding of mostly heavy mutton. Heavy ewes sold to erratic demand to average from 523c to 597c/kg cwt. Heavywethers were in limited supply making from $192 to $200/head. Trade sheep were in short supply averaging from 580c to 608/kg cwt.
