Lamb numbers nearly halved for the last sale before Christmas. Once again store types dominated with well finished trade and heavy young lambs in limited supply. The market did show a dearer trend, but it wasn’t consistent and there was price ebbs and flows across the auction. Well-bred lines of crossbred store lambs averaged $10 dearer, although sales late in the market weren’t as strong particularly for smaller penlots. Processing lambs varied from firm to $5 better, however there was isolated sales of fresh domestic lambs that showed bigger price gains. The bottom line was the market continued to perform around quality and condition.

The lead drafts of young lambs were mostly in the 26-30kg cwt range and sold from $200 to a top of $248 at an estimated 780c to 820c/kg cwt. Trade suckers 22-24kg made from $176 to $197 with enough numbers allowing processors to be selective. Plainer and lighter domestic lambs mostly $135 to $170/head. Store lamb competition was stronger and the main run of 16-18kg cwt crossbreds sold from $106 to $140 to av $125 to the paddock. Smaller stores under 16kg cwt from $70 to $124 to av $95 to restockers.

The sheep offering was limited and prices were generally $10 to $15 easier, although individual results did vary. Heavy crossbred ewes mostly $90 to $110 regardless of weight; middle run $80 to $108. Light and plain sheep $50 to $75. Selling at Ballarat will resume on Tuesday, January 10.
