55 Farms Newsletter - Combine sales up 59 percent in the US

By Casey Collin - www.55farms.com

This week the Association of Equipment Manufacturers reported that combine sales have rose to a 59 percent increase compared to this time last year as producers and custom harvesters prepare for this years wheat harvest and look for special financing. New tractors on the other hand are down which was anticipated with the uncertainty of profit margins in most producers already tight operational budgets. This week we saw a 1998 Case IH 2366 Combine sale for 52,000.00 out of the Midwest as well as a used Farm Hand Grapple in Nebraska bring 1900.00. With hay season underway in Texas we had a 2270 xd big square baler in excellent condition with 5000 bales on it sell for 125,000.00. We are still seeing lots of interest in older equipment that is still in good working condition. We have a customer in Alabama seeking an older used tyne drill (see listing no. 2092) so if anyone has one for sale be sure and get it listed and we will get him your information.

Shortage of Hay
As the old saying goes “not to sound like a broken record”, this week hay trade remains the same as trade is light due to shortage and demand is high with drought conditions continuing throughout parts of the United States. We are starting to see first cutting alfalfa and grass come on the market as well as wheat. This week we had some wheat trade at 165/ton in the field and triticale trading at 140/ton in the field. With hay shortage and high asking prices being met, producers are reporting to opt out of row crops to produce lower input forage for hay production. If this trend continues we could see a rise in hay inventory this fall. Livestock producers who choose to purchase hay rather than grow their own are starting to choose to sell livestock inventory rather than purchase hay at asking prices. For you hay producers in Texas be sure and check out listing 2090 that was listed this week a hay farm for lease, could be an opportunity for some of you to expand, and be sure and list that crop with 55 Farms!

Cattle market dives
As we discussed a couple of weeks ago, the cattle market took a dive this week with a large inventory headed to the packers that was bought a couple of weeks ago. Demand for grass cattle has, and until certain parts of the U.S. start to receive rain, replacement females remain steady to lower. There seems to be some opportunity for producers who have some forage on hand to pick up some young replacements, especially on some of these younger open cows coming to town in drought areas. This week we saw some young good pairs out of Missouri sell for 1500.00, young pairs medium framed in Georgia bring 1350, and a set of young second-trimester cows in Alabama sold for 1050.  We also listed a really nice set of well-bred Hereford bulls out of Wiley CO. listing number 2091, so be sure and take a look at them.
