$400 Lamb record twice at Ballarat

Lamb numbers increased slightly to 25,000, quality was again mixed with lambs off feed in excellent condition to lambs lacking weight and shape showing the sign of the dry cold conditions. Not all buyers were fully active in an buoyant market with price serges to $65/head dearer for extra heavy lambs, to break the lamb selling record at Ballarat. Light store lambs gained $9 to $15, light and medium trade sold $10 to $30 dearer and heavy trade gained $40/head.
Extra heavy export lambs sold to a record $400/head selling $50 to $65/head stronger to a week ago. Lambs back to the paddock made from $49 to $176 and lambs to feed on sold from $170 to $194/head. Light trade lambs under 18kg to suit MK orders sold from $134 to $181/head. Trade lambs 18 to 22kg sold from $170 to $228/head, 22 to 26kg sold $214 to $293, depending on quality there was a wide average 880c to 1050c/kg cwt. Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg made from $285 to $335 and over 30kg made from $320 to $400/head to average 1050c to 1100c/kg cwt. Merino lambs sold from $80 to $222/head.

Mutton numbers increased to 12,200 penned, quality was mixed. Several ewes are being presented in lamb with the dry and cold conditions producers are off loading as feed and water shortages continue. Not all buyers were active in a market with mixed results, bidding was erratic throughout the sale with buyers discounting ewes that are showing in lamb.
Merino wethers sold from $67 to $167 for the lighter weights while the heavier Merino wethers made from $185 to $190, gaining $10/head. Merino ewes sold from $24 to $160, selling firm to $5 dearer for the light weights and the heavier weights made from $160 to $200, slipping $10/head. Crossbred mutton sold from $48 to $146, selling to $5 either side of firm for the lighter weights and from $134 to $256/head for the heavy weights, gaining $13/head. Most heavy weight mutton average from 500c to 650c/kg cwt.
