My top 10 Ag industry theories - Agriculture is such an interesting topic. It's wide and diverse and different to any other industry. Having been involved all my life and spending 17 years as a hands-on Farmer, you see and learn a lot. Here are my top 10 Ag industry theories (not in order):

  1. Succession is probably the biggest controllable issue we have in Ag.
  2. You have to learn all the skills and actually do all the jobs if you want to be called a Farmer. You start out as a generalist, and as you get older, you become more of a specialist.
  3. The Agriculture industry will only let you grow your business at a certain pace. And it's not quick.
  4. To succeed in Ag, you need to build relationships and trust with people. Trust is earned in drops and lost in bucket loads.
  5. Young, 1st Generation Farmers can make it, but it takes a special type of person.
  6. The only way to grow in Ag is through incremental growth. Don't expect instant riches.
  7. Full Autonomy in Ag will take 50 years, maybe longer. Farmers like driving Tractors, and trusting a new model will take a generation or two.
  8. Having a mathematical mind or being good at numbers is a huge advantage for growing a successful Farm Business.
  9. Farmers will have to keep fighting causes to keep their Farming lifestyles intact. With threats coming from the Renewable Energy sector, Carbon, Governments, Methane, Mining, the list goes on.
  10. Land prices will keep rising.

I am happy for you to pull these apart, add some, disagree, or even agree. What are some of your Ag theories? Reply to dwaind@farmtender.com.au
