KW & KVA Ratings

With many generators advertised at their KVA power rating alone, one should be aware that the actual amount of power that can be drawn from the unit is rated in Watts (W) or Kilowatts (kW) where 1000 w = 1 kW.

KVA ratings are obtained by dividing the maximum kW output of either the engine or the generator by a power factor, which can be anywhere from 0.7 to 1.0.

The resulting figure can be much higher than the actual kW output. For example, a 5kW generator with a 6.8kW engine can be advertised as 7.5KVA, ie: 6.8 / 0.9 = 7.5
