Overview.
Hominy meal is a biproduct when processing maize (corn), it is cleaned and then seeped. Afterwards
it is ground and screened.
Hominy Meal can be for both for PMR and TMR use. In a PMR situation, Hominy can be added to a diet to reduce a higher starch type grain such Wheat or Triticale, however, IS NOT a straight kilo for kilo substitution. It can then provide a highly digestible source of slow-release starch to assist with higher protein grass creating “rate of Passage”, by allowing the natural urea in ryegrass in particular to be utilised more readily by the animal. The high digestibility of Hominy can be measured by the lower NDF content at 15%. EG, there with be minimal passed through the animal. In a TMR, Hominy can be a valuable part of a full ration by providing the starches and energy in TMR mix. Starchy energy and sugar type energy in full TMR play an important role in milk production and growth.
