Looking to the past to predict Crop planting in 2019

Restocking with sheep or cattle once a drought breaks is expensive, prices are high because of increased demand, so achieving a return on investment becomes a long-term proposition.

A wheat crop, on the other hand, is a relatively low-risk vehicle to drive cash flow in a relatively short time-frame.

Cropping or mixed farm owners in the eastern states will be facing a challenging 6-12 months once the drought breaks, or at least bends.

Historical data can provide some clues to our farmers’ expected behavior next year. Banging a wheat crop in the ground has historically been the fastest route to a paycheck for farmers with cropping capability.

This will also be reflected in increased demand for winter crop inputs including fungicide, herbicide and fertilizer, as growers look to winter cereal and canola crops to get them back on track.
