Lamb market stronger by $5-$15 at Ballarat

Lamb numbers decreased slightly this week to 38,300 yarded. The quality was plain to excellent with plenty of weight on offer across the yarding. All the usual buying group attended but not all operated fully in a stronger market to be $5 to $15/head up on last week's level. Several pens of excellent quality extra heavy, beautifully presented 30kg + lambs selling over $225 to reach $267/head. Shorn lambs 22kg to30kg ranged from $159 to $201/head to average around 705c/kg cwt.

Light weight 2 score lambs 12kg to 18kg sold from $97 to $139/head to average 740c/kg cwt. Light trade 2 and 3 score lambs 18kg to 22 kg sold from $139 to $169/head to average 715c/kg cwt. Lambs 22kg to 24kg sold from $160 to $184/head, ranging from 678c to 750c to average 718c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 to 4 score lambs 24kg to 26kg sold from $177 to $200/head to average 720c/kg cwt. Export lambs 26kg to30kg sold from $192 to $228/head to average 718c/kg cwt. Extra heavy export lambs 30kg+ sold from $225 to $267/head to average around712c/kg cwt. Heavy hoggets sold from $70 to $192 for crossbreds and Merinos sold from $116 to $156/head.

Sheep numbers incresed by 6,900 with 21,719 yarded, the quality was plain to very good, with all weights on offer. Not all the usual buying group attended and or operated in a mixed market to be around $3 to $10/head back on last week's levels and firm to slightly dearer for heavy Merino wethers with pressure from processes to stock paddocks for the christmas break. Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep made from$75 to $127 to average 560c with medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $103 to $160/head ranging from 525c to 670c with Merino mutton averaging around 620c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $150 to $179/head. Heavy crossbred ewes sold from $135 to $205/head. Heavy Merino wethers sold from $153 to $210, medium weights sold from $112 to $156/head to average around 630c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $32 to $ 135/head.
