For farm machinery company KUHN, the quest to produce top quality, densely packed and perfectly shaped bales in all crop conditions, is an ambition that’s inspired the development of what’s being described as the next generation of balers.

The new KUHN LSB 1290 iD large square baler comes with some innovative new features designed to boost efficiency, improve overall bale quality and ultimately increase profitability for producers.

KUHN Farm Machinery Marketing Manager & Baler Product Specialist, Michael Murer explains, “In essence, this baler creates perfect high-density bales that need less handling, use less twine, and ultimately reduce both transport costs and storage space,” he says. First and foremost is the LSB 1290 iD double plunger design, developed and patented by KUHN, produces bales 25% denser than those from conventional machines. “Its special TWINPACT plunger is a patented
system and a revolutionary development that creates 60 tons of even pressure across the entire bale, to create 25% more density than competitor balers”. Achieving the extra density requires twice the force exerted by a conventional plunger. To counter this, the TWINPACT plunger is divided into two parts, compressing the bale in two steps.

Avoiding those massive peak loads means there’s no greater power requirement with this machine than for other more conventional big balers that make these types of 120x90 cm bales. “We can achieve high density without more horsepower. That reduces the running costs, and it helps to deliver environmental savings too.”

The machine’s main intake function is another key feature that sets this machine apart from its competitors, says Michael. “Our integral rotor is a simple, maintenance-free intake system that ensures even feeding, regardless of crop conditions. The short distance between rotor and pick-up yields an outstanding crop flow, and it also makes possible higher forward speeds, for outstanding productivity and reduced crop damage.”

After the crop is gathered and pre-compressed in the pre-chamber, it’s moved upwards into the bale chamber in front of the plunger – and after reaching its pre-set length, the bale is secured by six twines and knotted by a double knotting system sourced from Rasspe. The cutting version, called OmniCut has 23 knives with individual hydraulic protection. An operator can easily select from the various available knife group configurations using just two levers.

Rob Addinsal from Victoria runs an Angus beef farm in addition to his hay contracting business and has been using the LSB 1290 iD for the past 12 months. “It’s definitely increased our profitability because it’s more efficient. It puts more hay in a bale and so there’s less cartage, and less time when the bale is out on the field. The team have also been brilliant. They’ve been out in the paddock with me at 5am”.

KUHN are convinced that the prospect of perfectly shaped bales, combined with high output and outstanding durability will make the KUHN LSB 1290 iD baler a profitable investment for hay and silage producers for years to come.

Michael concludes, “With all the features and innovations, combined to several seasons of testing, this new machine is set to forge new ground in baling for Australian contractors or farmers.”
