Grain industry influencers come together

Grain farmers came together to enhance their skills around engaging in critical discussions about food production through the GrainGrowers’ Grains Social Leadership Program (GSLP).

This week the third cohort of the GSLP took part in an intensive few days, examining their roles as influencers and leaders across their individual networks.

“The GSLP was a new initiative for GrainGrowers in 2019 and is now in its second year” said Kaitlin Commins, General Manager Leadership and Events. “We are building up to a ‘Grains100’; over 100 progressive grower leaders who are able to contribute to building the social licence and sustainability of our industry, by sharing their unique experiences as producers.

”With a recent research piece undertaken by GrainGrowers highlighting that community trust in the grains industry is positive at around 60 percent, it is important for the industry to improve this level of trust to allow it to continue to operate in a profitable and sustainable way.

GrainGrowers is helping support grain farmers and industry professionals to share the story of their farming practices and take part in community discussions about issues affecting agriculture, building stronger connections between the farm gate and consumer.

“Through our Grains Sustainability Framework project, we wanted to gain an understanding of what community expectations are of the grains industry and be proactive in our approach to this. The GSLP is about ensuring that grain farmers are powerful voices for our industry, channelling awareness and understanding across communities. It’s important that when there are issues raised by the community, there is a grower’s perspective and that they can share their experiences as producers.” said Commins.
