Easter and Anzac Day mess with Sheep and Lamb numbers at Ballarat

Yarding - 15,509 (-17,691) .
Lambs - 11,445 (-10,995).
Sheep - 4064 (-6736).

This week’s numbers reduced again due to Easter and Anzac day. The yarding was made up of mixed quality with very few extra heavyweight lambs offered creating more competition in the heavy lamb category. Not all the regular field of buyers were present and not operating fully in a mostly firm market.

Light weight 2 score lambs 12kg to 18kg were firm to $8 better selling to the processors between $54 to $146/head. Trade weight lambs eased $2 in places with the light and medium trade selling between $132 to $173 with the heavy trade selling between $152 and $176/head.

Well finished heavy lambs suiting the export and domestic market jumped up to $12 selling between $188 and $192 and the extra heavy export lambs between 26kg and 30kg lifted $5 making between $194 to $192/head, averaging 749c/kg cwt. The over 30kg lambs eased up to$12 due to lack of quality selling between $198 to $206/head.

The best of the hoggets offered today sold for $175/head.

Overall it was a mixed quality yarding of mutton, this resulted in a variable market trend. Medium weight 2 and 3 score ewes sold from $60 to $141/head. The best of the Merino 4 score ewes made to $156 and heavy crossbred ewes made between $143 to $163/head.
