Farm Tender

Check out this Grain Cargo Vessel

You’re looking at the cavernous interior of a typical cargo vessel we load to export grain to the world.

Each hold is able to contain 10,000 metric tonnes of grain. Depending on the water depth at the destination port, each ship will transport between 55,000 and 65,000 metric tonnes at a time.

This year, bulk carriers were actually used to reverse-export grain from Western Australia to the east coast. Filling that capacity via conveyor belts to a loading spout takes a few days and loading rates can be as high as 20,000 metric tonnes per day.

It gets pretty rough out there on the high seas, so the holds are sealed tight and only cracked open again once the vessel makes port.
