Buyers not fully operational saw the Ballarat Market for Sheep and Lambs down slightly

Yarding - 46,341 (+13,984).
Lambs - 31,241 (+12,984).
Sheep - 15,100 (+1000).

Lamb numbers were up at ballarat this week by 13,700, with 32,000 head drawn for. The quality ranged from average to good, especially over the shorn lambs finished on fodder crops. The usual buying group attended, but not all operated fully, amid reports of large numbers going direct to works. They operated with less urgency when compared to the high levels of last week, with shorn lambs easing from $5 to $10 and the unshorn lambs also easing from $5 to $10, and on quality up to $18/head in places. Heavy shorn lambs sold to $218 with the heavier trade weights selling from$151 to $172/head and averaging around 665c/kg cwt. Unshorn young lambs reached $195/head. Restockers and feeders from the Wimmera, South West, the North East and Mallee areas and local, were active and paid from $100 to $151.50 for shorn lambs and paid from $110 to $161/head for unshorn young lambs.

Shorn light weight lambs sold from $83 to $115/head. Light trade 2 and 3 score lambs sold from $111 to $140/head and averaged around 675c/kg cwt. Trade weight 3 and 4 score shorn lambs sold from $140 to $149, with the heavier weights selling from $151 to $172/head, they ranged from 630c to 700c to average around 665c/kg cwt. Heavy shorn lambs sold from $166 to $209.20, with the extra heavy lambs selling to $218/head. Heavy unshorn young lambs sold from $166 to $195 and the trade weights sold from $144 to $167/head, they averaged around 650c/kg cwt. Heavy hoggets made to $134/head.

There were 15,100 sheep yarded, up about 1,000 on last week. There were many quality pens of both Merino and crossbred sheep penned. Not all the regular buying group attended or operated in an easier market. Most sheep sold from $8 to $10 easier and up to $20/head easier at times. Northern processors provided the competition on the heavier sheep. Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $38 to $77 at around 320c/kg cwt, with very light sheep selling from $2 to $50/head. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $58 to $120/head and ranged from 280c to 430c, with the Merino mutton averaging around 375c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $94 to $115, the heavy Merino wethers sold from $100 to $115 and the medium weights sold from $64 to $111/head, the heavy Merino sheep averaged from 380c to 410c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred sheep sold from $79 to $123/head and averaged around 315c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $20 to $85/head.
