Bidding keen at Bendigo

Big jump in supply with 27,000 lambs yarded for an increase of nearly 20,000 head on a week ago. Shorn lambs are now dominating, and there was some impressive drafts showing a lot of weight. The majority of the shorn lambs weighed above 26kg up to super weights of 38kg at the top of the export run. Bidding was keen and there was enough processor demand to handle the extra supply, despite some companies not operating fully. There was an obvious shortage of well finished trade sized lambs in the yarding, and domestic buyers did have to go up in weight to access better quality. Many of the trade weight lambs lacked fat cover and this was reflected in some of the cheaper trends evident in these categories. Support for young lambs still in the wool was patchy, with buyers wary of the carcase finish underneath.

Shorn export lambs sold to $285 for an estimated 38kg and it was one of half a dozen pens of extra heavy lambs to sell above $270/head. Most heavy lambs 30kg plus sold from $240 to $265 or from 750c to 800c/kg cwt depending on size. Heavy lambs in a weight range of 26 to30kg received both domestic and export competition to make from $220 to $261 to average $230/head over a mixed run. Good heavy trade lambs also trended over $200/head. On a carcase basis processing lambs from 24 to 30kg were returning averages from 810c to 850c, with select pens nudging 900c/kg cwt at times. Light weight lambs sold from $130 to $165/head for most, with restockers the dominant purchasers ahead of processors.

Just 6,400 sheep yarded, comprising mostly shorn crossbred and Merino ewes. Only a few good lines of Merino wethers were available. Competition was solid with good runs of mutton costing processors an estimated 570c to 630c/kg cwt, with higher rates paid for more nicely weighted trade bodies. Heavy crossbred ewes sold to $259, although exporters rarely went above $220/head. Most heavy sheep sold from$170 to $210 with the lighter sheep making from $120 to $160/head.
