Ballarat Lambs 10-20 cent dearer in places

Numbers increased this week at Ballarat to 28,116 head. Young lamb numbers increased again this week to 19,169 head, the quality was very good with all weights offered. The usual buying group attended and operated in a strong market with extra competition on the medium and light weight new season lambs from restockers and feeders, prices were generally firm and to be 10c to 20c/kg dearer in place on last weeks levels. Restockers and feeders were very active paying from $149 to $214/head. Heavy young lambs sold to $244 and heavy old lambs sold to$228/head.

Light weight 2 and 3 score young lambs sold from $125 to $158/head. Light trade lambs, 18kg to 22kg, sold from $150 to $182/head to average 790c/kg cwt. Medium trade weight 3 and 4 score lambs, 22kg to 24kg, sold from $181 to $210/head, ranging from 780c to 837c to average 800c/kg cwt. Heavy 3 and 4 score trade weight lambs from 24kg to 26kg, sold from $190 to $221/head to average around 795c/kg cwt. Export lambs 26kg to 30kg, sold from $214 to $240/head to average 810c/kg cwt. Extra heavy lambs 30kg+ sold to $244/head.

Medium and heavy old lambs sold from $133 to $228/head to average around 695c/kg cwt. Heavy crossbred Hogget's sold from $114 to $174, and Merino hogget's sold from $74 to $145/head.

Sheep numbers decreased slightly to 8,947 yarded, the quality ranged from average to good, with all weights offered. All the usual buying group attended but not all operated fully, prices held firm to a few dollars dearer in places for the better covered sheep. Light weight 1 and 2 score sheep sold from $66 to $112/head to average 530c/kg cwt. Medium weight 2 and 3 score sheep sold from $89 to $165/head, with merino mutton averaging around 610c/kg cwt. Heavy Merino ewes sold from $150 to $188, averaging 630c/kg cwt and heavy crossbred ewes sold from $100 to $174/head. Heavy Merino wethers sold from $160 to $185, while medium weights sold from $100 to $164/head to average around 610c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $25 to $151/head.
