A few days back, a friend and me were brainstorming on how the Agriculture Industry has made progress in the last decade.

As we talked, it became pretty obvious that while there is a growing demand in Agriculture Production, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will play a major role as a game changer. Some amazing progress was made in the last few years. For example, if properly adopted, AI can help a farmer predict risk of an infection based on parameters, rather than let the human intuition act as a guide.

But is the Agriculture Industry AI ready?

The Agribusiness, almost a $2.4 trillion industry worth, encompasses agrochemicals, breeding, crop production, distribution, farm machinery, processing, and seed supply, as well as marketing and retail sales. And each of these sectors in the #Agribusiness has matured in terms of introducing and adopting new technologies in the last decade.

But is it true that the tech giants are not deeply rooted when it comes to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Agriculture Industry?

Should the next wave of #AI focus on Agriculture in a more practical and achievable direction?

It is high time the companies thinking still in a traditional way, start ideating how to use data smartly, to increase productivity. I see the challenge amongst the small farms/ companies, in adopting AI. They do not have huge data for analysis. But instead of sitting back, we need to find new AI techniques to help analyse data to influence decision making.

The budgets allocated and the focus in this industry, to take it to the next step, has broadly been hardware. But to make the next wave of AI in Agriculture more successful, the way ahead is, collection of more data and making them available to the farmers for better visibility and decision making.

AI can deeply influence the way we farm and grow healthier crops. Imagine getting exact predictions of when you need to plan resources to harvest the crops – strawberry is one example that comes to my mind instantly!
