Farm Tender

Hay Report - It's the business end

For the fortnight up to the 7th of September 2021.

The new Hay season is upon us. We are hearing that Crops in the Geraldton area of WA have been severely frosted, and cutting is taking place as we speak. As Paul mentions below, Vetch Hay cutting will begin in the Mallee this week. We have been told that there won't be much Hay cut in the Mallee this year.

There has been talk that a fair percentage of the Vetch will be green manured.

It's not straight forward the Hay Season. The cutting side is the easiest. It's the curing and baling side which causes operator angst. So predictions are always fraught with danger as no two Hay seasons are the same.

Like it does nearly every year, the Hay season rolls into Harvest, Harvest will take precedence, and the Hay will be left for "later". This is precisely what happened last year, the season dragged out much longer than it should have. Who knows what's in store for this season.

As we have mentioned in the last few Hay Reports, quality will be the key in 2021. If you have a quality product, then you are a much better chance of selling in this low demand climate.

Good luck with the upcoming Hay season.

What's happened to Hay prices over the last fortnight?

Vetch Hay sales for the last fortnight had a price range from $120 to $210 a tonne

Cereal Hay sold for anywhere between $120 to $140 a tonne

All prices quoted are Ex GST and Ex Farm.

We go around the grounds to see what our Farm Tender Salespeople have to say:

Paul Grayling - Mallee, Vic based

Paul said - I have heard that some part of the Mallee will start to cut Vetch Hay this week, that has come around soon enough. Lots of people are asking the question of whats the Hay prices looking like on new season stuff? The Quick Answer NFI! I can't really see the price being set until things are in a bale. Quality again will be the biggest determining factor. I, like many others, will be waiting and watching to see how things pan out.

Shane Ruyg - Qld based

Shane said - Shane has been on leave for the last few days.

Mike Pickard - Darling Downs, Qld based

Mike said - Reasonable quantities of Vetch and Oaten Hay have been selling at reasonably cheap rates so farmers can empty the sheds ready for the oncoming season. Also, large quantities of Barley Hay Rolls have been selling down to the Gippsland area from Northern Victoria. We hear that some Farmers in Northern New South Wales are looking for Swathers to do Hay and Canola. If you have a spare Windrower/Swather to sell, get it listed.
